Mercurio: 3D Glass Cut to Size

Customers build their glass, acrylic or mirror sheet in 3D, within the rules of the material, see the price as they go and add it to the cart. You get every order with cut sheets, labels and machine files.

Get started

  1. Install the app from the Shopify App Store and open it in your admin. A short guided setup opens.
  2. Your plan: start with Free or try a paid plan for 30 days.
  3. Your products: the app reads your products and finds the ones with a thickness option. Set them up in one go, or create new products for each material from a preset.
  4. The button: choose where the Configure in 3D button sits on the product page.
  5. Switch on in your theme: one click opens the theme editor, see below.
  6. Open a product in your store and click Configure in 3D. View in store in the app takes you straight there.

The app changes no theme files. Your progress is shown under Overview → Setup.

Switch on in your theme

Shopify asks you to switch app buttons on yourself. In the setup or on the overview, click Switch on in the theme editor: the theme editor opens with App embeds and 3D configurator button already switched on. Press Save at the top right of the theme editor and come back to the app tab; the status updates by itself.

The app embed places the button among the buy buttons of every product with the configurator, in the font and height of your cart button. Under Button and configurator you choose the position: above Add to cart, between Add to cart and Buy it now, below Buy it now, or instead of the buy buttons. Instead of the buy buttons hides your theme's cart button, so the configurator is the only way to buy and the price is always right.

Want the button somewhere else? Add the 3D configurator button block to your product page in the theme editor (Add block → Apps).

Its own page: the configurator also has a page in your store, in your theme's header and footer. /apps/mercurio-3d/configure?product=your-product-handle opens it for one product right away; /apps/mercurio-3d/configure lists every product with the configurator. You can link it from your menu or a banner.

Set up or create products

The configurator works on normal Shopify products. Each thickness is one variant, for example an option Thickness with the values 3 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm. The option is found in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Swedish, and values in mm, cm or inches are read.

  • Existing products: open Products. Set up all sets up every product with a thickness option. Your product types appear as chips: click one to leave products like tools or samples out.
  • New products: open Create products and start from material presets. Each preset becomes one product with its edges, extras, sizes, rules and suggested prices you can change. Give each product a name, type and colour, pick the thicknesses as chips and set every price: per m² and base fee for each thickness, edges, extras, cut-outs, holes, surcharges and quantity breaks. With several products selected, Apply these prices to all selected products copies the fees, cut-out and hole prices, breaks, surcharges and the prices of edges and extras with the same name; prices per m² and base fees stay per product.

The app creates the products with one variant per thickness, several at once, as drafts or active and on your Online Store. The variant price is the price for a 50 x 50 cm sheet, and the variants sell without stock, because every piece is made to order. Each new product can get a product picture as its first photo.

Presets:

  • Acrylic: clear, extruded (XT) and cast (GS), white opal, white opaque, black, frosted, smoke grey, red and blue tinted, and acrylic mirror.
  • Other plastics and panels: polycarbonate, PVC foam board, aluminium composite, PE-HD.
  • Glass: float glass, low-iron glass, toughened glass (ESG), low-iron toughened glass, shower glass, satin glass, grey glass and kitchen backsplash glass.
  • Mirror: silver and bronze.

The suggested prices follow a German online shop in euro. Check them for your market and change them before you create the products.

The switch on each product card turns the configurator on or off for that product.

Edit a product

Open Products and click a product. A 3D preview next to the settings shows the configurator exactly as customers see it and changes with every setting.

  • Material: a preset sets the look plus the edges, extras, sizes, shapes and rules that suit its material, for example acrylic, glass or mirror. Or set the kind, the finish (clear, frosted, opaque or mirror), the colour, how much light passes through, whether it is toughened glass and its thickness tolerance.
  • Thicknesses and prices: each thickness with its variant, a price per m² or per running metre (for strips and profiles) and an optional base fee. Suggest prices fills in the preset's prices. Sample prices for 50 x 50 cm and 100 x 100 cm help you check the result. You choose which thickness is shown first.
  • Sizes: the smallest side, the largest width and height, the size the configurator starts with, and whether customers see cm or inches.
  • Shapes and extras: which of the 12 shapes customers can pick, whether cut-outs and drill holes are allowed, and extras per piece such as deburred edges or an ESG stamp, each with its own price and a short note.
  • Edges: the edge finishes you offer, for example sawn, laser cut, milled, seamed, polished, mitred or bevelled, each with a price per metre (also by thickness), an optional smallest and largest size, the DIN code for glass orders, the size tolerance, a note and the shapes it is allowed for.
  • Prices: the fee per piece, surcharges per shape, cut-outs by type (rectangle or round) with a surcharge for large ones, drill holes by diameter, a minimum billed area, a surcharge for large pieces, a minimum per piece and rounding.
  • Quantity breaks: a discount from a number of pieces, for example 10 % from 5 pieces. The configurator shows the next step and the full price struck through.
  • Rules for this material: the rules the configurator applies, in plain words, see Rules for each material.
  • Product picture: make, replace or remove the picture made from the 3D sheet.
  • More: a delivery time shown in the configurator, and a link to a sample product.

How the price works

For each piece the configurator adds up:

  • the material: width x height times the price per m² of the chosen thickness, at least the minimum billed area. A round or angled piece is cut from a full rectangle, so the rectangle counts. With a price per running metre, the longer side counts;
  • the edge length, including the edges of cut-outs, times the price per metre of the chosen edge at this thickness;
  • each cut-out by its type and size, each drill hole by its diameter, and each chosen extra;
  • the base fee of the thickness, or else the fee per piece, a shape surcharge and a surcharge for large pieces where you set them.

The minimum per piece and rounding apply to that sum, then the quantity break. Customers see the parts of the price under the quantity, unless you switch Show the price breakdown off under Button and configurator. In the cart, the line has exactly this price, on every Shopify plan: the app checks the price and the rules on its server and adds a variant with that price from a hidden helper product.

Rules for each material

The configurator only lets customers build pieces that can be made. A hole or cut-out that breaks a rule turns red, the panel says why, and it moves to the nearest allowed place. Your store checks every rule again before it prices a piece.

  • Toughened glass (ESG), after EN 12150-1: holes only from 4 mm glass, a hole at least as large as the glass is thick, at least twice the thickness from the edge and between holes, at least six times the thickness from a corner, and at least a seamed edge. Customers read that toughened glass can't be cut, drilled or ground after it is made.
  • Pieces that need your check: on toughened glass, holes closer than 35 mm to the edge or more than 4 holes. You choose under Rules for this material whether customers see a notice and can still order, or must contact you first.
  • Other glass and mirrors keep the same distances as a safe default.
  • Plastics and panels: hole centres keep 1.5 times the diameter from the edge. Acrylic customers read how much room to leave for the sheet to grow with heat.
  • Cut-outs: keep a distance from the edge, and their inside corners keep the smallest radius the edge allows, for example 7 mm in glass, 2 mm milled and 5 mm sawn; laser cuts need none.
  • Tolerances: each edge has its size tolerance, toughened glass at least the one from EN 12150-1, plus the thickness tolerance of the material. Customers see them as chips, and they appear on the glass order sheet.

A hole distance factor above 1 keeps holes further from edges and corners than the rules ask. The rules help, but they do not replace your own check or your supplier's advice.

The configurator

The sheet lies in a small room with the measurements drawn on. Customers turn it, zoom and choose:

  • Thickness as chips, each with the price for the current piece.
  • Shape: rectangle, rounded corners, circle, ellipse, half circle, quarter circle, triangle, right triangle, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon and arch.
  • Size with fields, sliders or handles on the sheet; arrow keys change it by 1 cm.
  • Edge and finishing, with the edge shown up close and its tolerance.
  • Cut-outs: rectangles, also turned and with rounded inside corners, and circles, one at a time, in the four corners or as a grid. The position is the centre of the cut-out, measured from the left and the bottom edge. Customers can also drag it in the 3D view.
  • Drill holes: single, in the four corners or as a grid, with their diameter and the distances the material needs.
  • Quantity, with the price per piece, the total and the parts of the price.

Undo and redo, a link to share the piece, and a picture to save are under the 3D view. On phones the settings sit in a sheet that customers pull up. On the Grow and Scale plans you set the configurator's colours, corners and the room's floor (wood, concrete or white) under Button and configurator. The storefront speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Swedish.

Product pictures

The app makes a product picture from the 3D sheet, the same look for every product, so collections, search and the cart show the material instead of an empty space. Your own photos stay: the app only ever replaces the picture it made itself, in the same place among your photos.

  • New products: with Add a product picture under Settings → Product pictures, every product you create in the app gets the picture as its first photo.
  • Existing products: Make picture on a product, or Make pictures for several in the product list. A product shows when its picture is out of date, for example after you changed its colour or thicknesses.
  • Style: under Settings → Product pictures choose the background (white, light grey, soft gradient, your accent colour or transparent), the angle, a soft shadow, whether every thickness shows as its own sheet, a thickness chip and the spacing. The style is part of every paid plan; Free uses the default style.

Keep the page open while the pictures are made; they are drawn in your browser and uploaded to your Shopify product.

Orders and files

Every order with a configured piece appears under Orders. Each order has a status (new, in production, cut, shipped) that you set for one or many orders at once. The order page draws every piece with its cut-outs C1, C2 … and drill holes H1, H2 … (in German A1 and B1), with material, area and edge length. The order list adds up the pieces and m² per material and thickness for the orders shown or selected, so the workshop knows what to cut.

Download one order or many. With several orders the pieces are sorted by material and thickness, so you can cut sheet by sheet. Every file uses the same rules: all sizes in mm, origin 0/0 at the bottom left corner of the piece, holes and cut-outs by their centre.

To print

  • Cut sheets (PDF, English or German): page 1 is the cut list. Then one A4 page per piece with the drawing to scale, measurements, the origin, a table of cut-outs and holes with X and Y, and boxes to tick: cut, edges, holes, cut-outs, checked, packed.
  • Glass order sheet (PDF): for your glass processor. An overview with totals per glass and thickness, then one page per pane with the DIN 1249-11 edge code (for example KGS seamed, KPO polished), toughened or not, the position of the ESG stamp, holes and cut-outs with their tolerances, the EN 12150-1 tolerances and the EN 12150 check of every hole and cut-out.
  • Piece labels (PDF): one label per piece with label, order, size, material, thickness, edge, holes and a QR code to the order. On A4 sheets of 3 × 8 labels (70 × 37 mm) or one 100 × 50 mm label per page for thermal printers.

Lists

  • Cut list (CSV): one row per piece with order, position, label, product, material, thickness, shape, width, height, radius, quantity, edge, extras, cut-outs, holes, area, edge length and price, with totals per material. The English file uses commas, the German one semicolons for Excel.
  • Parts list for cutting optimisers (CSV): label, length, width, quantity, a material code of its own for every material, thickness, grain, whether the piece may turn and the edges per side, for programs such as OptiCut, MaxCut or CutList Optimizer.
  • Holes and cut-outs (CSV): one row per hole or cut-out with its size, X and Y from the bottom left corner.
  • CutRite PTX: a cutting list for HOMAG CutRite and SCM Maestro beam saws.
  • JSON with every piece for your own tools.

For machines

  • DXF per piece (ZIP): DXF R12 at 1:1 in mm for CNC, laser and waterjet, with real arcs. Full circles are circles, ellipses are smooth arcs, there are no splines. Holes and cut-outs come before the outer contour, so the machine cuts inside first. The file name ends in _mm; import as millimetres.
  • DXF, lines and arcs: every curve as single lines and arcs, for OMAX and older CAM programs.
  • DXF per material: all pieces of one material and thickness side by side, 10 mm apart, ready to nest.
  • Laser files (DXF and SVG): red hairlines only, no text, no fill, for programs such as Trotec, Epilog and LightBurn.
  • SVG per piece with measurements.

Layers: under Settings you choose the layer names in the DXF files. Generic uses OUTER for the outer contour, INNER for cut-outs, DRILL for holes and INFO for label, material, thickness and edge as text outside the part. Templates for HOMAG woodWOP and SCM Maestro name the layers the way these machines read them, or you set your own names.

Check before you cut. The files follow exactly what your customer entered. Before you saw, mill or laser, compare sizes, holes and cut-outs with the order and run a test piece on your machine. The app's rule checks help, but they do not replace your check. Before the first download the app asks you to confirm this once. Something does not match? Send us the order and the file at hello@mercuriolabs.app: we check it and try to deliver a fix the same day.

How long orders are kept. Orders with their cut data stay in the app for 24 months. 30 days before an order is deleted, an orange note in the app asks you to download a backup (one ZIP with JSON and cut lists). Your orders themselves stay in Shopify.

Units

Under Settings › Units (and once in the setup) you choose three things. What the app stores never changes: pieces are kept in millimetres, a unit only changes what you see and what the files say.

  • For your customers: the configurator shows Like my store (the unit system in your Shopify settings), centimetres, millimetres or inches. With Customers can switch to inches a small cm | in switch appears in the configurator; the cart then shows the sizes in the unit the customer picked.
  • For you: order pages, cut sheets, labels and the cut-list CSV in millimetres, centimetres or inches (areas in ft² for inches). Thicknesses always stay in millimetres, they name the sheet. In inches the glass order sheet shows the sizes in mm as well, and the tolerances of EN 12150 stay in mm.
  • For your machines: DXF, SVG, the parts list for optimisers and the holes and cut-outs list in millimetres (recommended) or inches. The unit is in every file name (_mm.dxf or _in.dxf) and in the DXF header and INFO text. CutRite PTX always uses millimetres.

Most saws, CNC and lasers in Europe work in millimetres. Choose inches only if your machines are set to inches, and test the first file on your machine before you cut.

Every paid plan can be tried free for 30 days, once per store. Shopify bills the plan on your Shopify invoice. When you move to a lower plan, nothing is deleted: products beyond the limit lose their button until you upgrade again, and files of a higher plan show which plan includes them.

Configurator opens are a soft limit: the configurator never stops for your customers. The app counts how often it opens per calendar month and shows a note in the admin from 80 %. Only when two months in a row are far above the plan (more than 120 %) does it ask for a bigger plan, and your customers see the small watermark until you upgrade or a month stays under it. On Scale the note asks you to write to us instead.

Questions

Why does a product have no button?

Check these in order: the app embed 3D configurator button is switched on in your live theme; the product is switched on under Products; every thickness has a variant and a price; your plan's product limit is not reached.

Why is there a hidden product with the same name?

Shopify puts the variant price in the cart, not a price worked out on the page. So the app keeps one hidden helper product per configured product and adds a variant with exactly the customer's price to it. The helper is hidden from your store's search and from the app's product list. Please don't delete it while the product sells.

Which details reach the order?

The cart line carries shape, size, thickness, edge, finishing, cut-outs, drill holes and the price per piece, so you see them in Shopify's order too. The app's Orders area turns them into cut sheets and files.

Why did a hole move by itself?

It broke a rule of the material, for example it sat too close to the edge of toughened glass. The configurator moves it to the nearest place that can be made and says why. See Rules for each material.

Will the app replace my product photos?

No. The app adds its own picture made from the 3D sheet and only ever replaces or removes that one. Your photos keep their place.

Can I sell in inches?

Yes. Each product shows cm or inches. The files for the workshop are always in mm.

What about privacy?

The app stores the configured pieces of each order (sizes, material, cut-outs, holes, price), not your customers' names, addresses or payment details. Insights count configurator opens and carts per product anonymously: no cookies, no personal data.

Does the app change my theme?

No. The button comes from a Shopify app embed and an optional app block. Switching the embed off or uninstalling the app removes it completely.

Can you see my data?

Your settings and orders with cut data are stored encrypted in our database at Cloudflare. Technically we could open them, but we only look at a store's data when you ask us for help in support. The app does not store names, addresses, email addresses or payment data of your customers. Visitor statistics are only recorded when the visitor allowed analytics in your cookie banner.

What happens when I uninstall?

The button disappears and the plan ends. Products you created with the app stay in Shopify. All app data for your store is deleted 48 hours after uninstalling. If you reinstall before that, your settings are still there.
